The Corps at Derby II was opened in 1882 amidst opposition, with open air services being attacked and soldiers and officers being imprisoned for creating disturbances. Despite the adverse conditions a band was formed in 1883 which has functioned ever since.
By the year 1910 the band had become an efficient and smart combination and travelled widely throughout the UK.
Derby Central was one of the first SA bands to undertake an overseas tour in 1922. The visit to Sweden lasted 14 days and proved most successful. The band visited Holland in 1929, and the band was pleased to return in 1992 and share fellowship and music with the Corps people in Gorinchem.
In more recent years the band has broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Bandstand programme, appeared on Yorkshire Television and travelled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. On the death of William Booth one of the tributes paid was as follows: “What defines the character and genius of General Booth better than anything else is the fact that he changed the worlds mind”.
Derby Central Band today is still following in the founder’s footsteps by endeavouring to change people’s minds by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in music. We pray that our music and singing will be an encouragement, bring peace to the spirit and stimulate an interest in the Christian faith.
Current activities undertaken by the band in Derby include visits to local hospitals and hospices, retirement homes and presenting charity concerts to raise money for a number of worthy causes in addition to its weekly participation in the services at the Salvation Army .
All the members of the band give up their spare time to practice and perform as there are no full time members.
